My poems

To My Father

By: Erik Sattler

I look up to my dad, not in height but as a man
someone who always tries his best, always does the best than he can
doesn’t show much emotion, but when i was born he did cry
shows the love he has for his family, a family for whom he would die.

He grew up in a small town, kind of a derelict kid
not too book smart, knew how to make his teachers blow their lid
he enrolled in the army, got stronger, learned how to fight
he learned to respect, how to serve, and serve with all his might

got out the army, learned construction , learned a very good skill
learned to , swing a hammer, build a house,  how to drill
through this he met a girl, they used to dance the night away
he married her, had kids, and she’s still his wife today

he has a great trait, and its is  that he is not selfish at all
he’s actually a volunteer firefighter, he’s always ready for the call
helping is what he does, always does it  with a smile on his face
taught me to love the flag and salute it in all its grace

Ill fight with my mom sometimes and always make her look like a mess
my dad says why you gotta do that son and I  apologize for causing all the stress
but no matter how mad i get him sometimes I  know he will always have my back
together well take any challenges, face the world,  be ready to attack

The best thing about my dad, is that he is who I wanna be
his traits that he passed down is my favorite part about me
He took me through baseball, fire department, and even boy scouts
He taught me what I know today, things I once knew nothing about

I don’t know why I don’t hug him to often, I guess i just forget
But I know one day when he’s gone, not hugging him I will regret
I don’t really show enough love as I really should do
“its not manly”  but the love i got for this man is very true

so I wake up every morning and smile when i see him there
cause when he won’t be, its gonna be really hard to bear
your my hero dad, I love you every single day
Those are just some of the things i think about you but never really say

So We Drink On

I see a few regulars in the bar everyday
Many people say all they do is drink
I don't judge, I actually study them
I want to know what they think

Some are rude, some are nice
but I look at the calm and serene
because there is a little mystery behind them
of whats going on behind the scenes

see the man on the end was in world war two
he remembers all the horror and all the freight
so when he comes, he comes to forget
and stays here almost all night

Theres a younger man next to him
who he talks to about everything he did see
the young man wants to enlist
a hero is what he is dreaming to be

to the left is one man who is black
discrimination he has faced
the bar is where he fits in
Where everyone drinks, no matter what your race

Theres usually a kid who comes in
He has an ID but we all think its a fake
We all judge him that hes too young to drink
but disregard the abuse at home he takes

On man comes in and everyone cheers
Everyone knows his name and screams"Fred"
We all though he had the perfect life
Till one  night he put a bullet in his head

My favorite guest comes in
but always sits to the side
and yes he gets drunk, drunker than ever
but everyday walks out with his pride

ITS UP TO YOU

By: Erik Sattler

Life is full of happiness
But will only occur if you let it in
Will it burst like a ray of sunshine
or will it rot in a rusty old tin

Fields grazed with green grass
The sun is shining  brightly
