Ernest Hemingway is definitely one
of the most interesting American writers. He is also one of the most important
of the 20th century American writers. Ernest Hemingway adventured
and loved taking part in things like hunting, fishing, skiing and other outdoor
activities. He served in the war and created many pieces of literature that were
famous then and are still famous now.
Ernest Hemingway was born on July
21st, 1899 in Cicero, Illinois. He was educated in public schools and began
writing in high school. Instead of going to college, Ernest Hemingway went to
go work for “The Star” in Kansas City as a reporter. He tried to serve in ww1
but he was rejected multiple time due to an eye deficiency. He wound up serving
as an ambulance driver for the American Red Cross. During his time serving, he
was injured on the Austrio- Italian front where he was brought to a hospital to
fall in love with a nurse. The nurses name was Agnus von Kurowsky. The nurse
declined to marry Hemingway which made a huge impact on his life.
Coming back from world war one, He
was advised by many writers one being F. Scott Fitzgerald to go to Paris. In
Paris, he began his no journalistic work. In 1925, his first important book
came out. It was called “The Sun Also Rises”. During his time not writing he
enjoyed taking part of outdoor activities including skiing, bull riding,
hunting, and fishing. He later came out with books like “Men without Women”(1927)
and “ Winner Takes Nothing” (1933).
Hemingway also had a love for Spain
and wrote “A Death in Afternoon” while Spain was in their little civil war.
During world war two, Hemingway attached himself to the 22ndregiment
of the 4th infantry to write about the war. He was there for the
battle of the bulge in Normandy, and he saw a lot of action.
In 1953, he received the Pulitzer
Prize in fiction for “ The Old Man and The Sea”. 3 years later he received the
Nobel piece price for literature. In 1960 he went back to Idaho where he lived
until he committed suicide with a shot gun in 1961. Hemingway had a lot of
anxiety and depression he dealt with throughout his life. This especially
kicked in towards the end. Hemingway was married 4 times. Every time he married
one woman, he fell in love with another. Towards the end of his life he became very
depressed because everything he lived for wasn’t the same as it used to be. He
took his life on July 2nd, 1961. Ernest Hemingway is considered one
of the best writers in history. His greatest piece of work unlike other
writers, was his life. He went outside and did what he enjoyed dong and still
wrote great pieces of literature.
