Ernest Hemingway is definitely one of the most interesting American writers. He is also one of the most important of the 20th century American writers. Ernest Hemingway adventured and loved taking part in things like hunting, fishing, skiing and other outdoor activities. He served in the war and created many pieces of literature that were famous then and are still famous now.
Ernest Hemingway was born on July 21st, 1899 in Cicero, Illinois. He was educated in public schools and began writing in high school. Instead of going to college, Ernest Hemingway went to go work for “The Star” in Kansas City as a reporter. He tried to serve in ww1 but he was rejected multiple time due to an eye deficiency. He wound up serving as an ambulance driver for the American Red Cross. During his time serving, he was injured on the Austrio- Italian front where he was brought to a hospital to fall in love with a nurse. The nurses name was Agnus von Kurowsky. The nurse declined to marry Hemingway which made a huge impact on his life.
Coming back from world war one, He was advised by many writers one being F. Scott Fitzgerald to go to Paris. In Paris, he began his no journalistic work. In 1925, his first important book came out. It was called “The Sun Also Rises”. During his time not writing he enjoyed taking part of outdoor activities including skiing, bull riding, hunting, and fishing. He later came out with books like “Men without Women”(1927) and “ Winner Takes Nothing” (1933).
Hemingway also had a love for Spain and wrote “A Death in Afternoon” while Spain was in their little civil war. During world war two, Hemingway attached himself to the 22ndregiment of the 4th infantry to write about the war. He was there for the battle of the bulge in Normandy, and he saw a lot of action.
In 1953, he received the Pulitzer Prize in fiction for “ The Old Man and The Sea”. 3 years later he received the Nobel piece price for literature. In 1960 he went back to Idaho where he lived until he committed suicide with a shot gun in 1961. Hemingway had a lot of anxiety and depression he dealt with throughout his life. This especially kicked in towards the end. Hemingway was married 4 times. Every time he married one woman, he fell in love with another. Towards the end of his life he became very depressed because everything he lived for wasn’t the same as it used to be. He took his life on July 2nd, 1961. Ernest Hemingway is considered one of the best writers in history. His greatest piece of work unlike other writers, was his life. He went outside and did what he enjoyed dong and still wrote great pieces of literature.
